There are many things in life that can change unexpectedly. Circumstances change,
relationships change, health changes, and the future can sometimes seem uncertain. But
for the believer, there is one glorious certainty that never changes: the love of God in
Christ Jesus
.
Romans 8 begins with the wonderful declaration that there is “now no condemnation
for those who are in Christ Jesus
” (v. 1), and it closes with the equally wonderful
assurance that nothing can separate us from the love of God. Paul’s confidence is not
based upon the strength of our faith, the goodness of our circumstances, or our ability to
hold tightly to God. It rests upon what God has accomplished for us through Jesus
Christ. Earlier Paul asks, “He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him over
for us all, how will He not also with Him freely give us all things?”
 (v. 32). The cross
is the great demonstration of God’s love and the foundation of our assurance. Paul then
considers every possible threat—death and life, spiritual powers, the present and the
future, things above and things below—and declares that none of them can separate the
believer from Christ. This does not mean Christians will be spared sorrow, suffering,
uncertainty, or loss. Romans 8 acknowledges all of these realities. Our security is found
in something greater: even in the midst of them, God’s love for His children remains
unchanged
. Our salvation began with God’s grace, was secured through Christ’s finished
work, and is kept by God’s power. The Savior who died for us and rose again is the same
Savior who keeps us. Whatever we may face today or tomorrow, the believer can rest in
this glorious truth: Nothing in all creation can separate us from the love of God which is
in Christ Jesus our Lord.
