Fully Accepted as a Child of God
Scripture:
“But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name” (John 1:12, NASB95)
7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for [b]God sees not as man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” (1 Samuel 16:7, NASB95)
Introduction
We face an epidemic of poor self-image today. Abuse of social media activity causes deep pain and feelings of rejection and depression. It’s already way too easy to feel judged by the world, and now it can go viral. People often evaluate us by our appearance, accomplishments, or reputation. But God’s perspective is completely different. He sees the heart—the part of you that others cannot see—and He accepts you fully. Through Christ, we are adopted into God’s family, fully loved and secure, not because of what we do, but because of what Christ has done, and because of who we are in Him. Whatever others may say about you, Christ gave His life for you. When you believe this, you become a child of God, and an heir with Christ. What a high and blessed position that is for all who come to Him in faith.
God Sees the Heart
1 Samuel 16:7 reminds us that God looks past external appearances.
He doesn’t base His love or approval on how polished, successful, or impressive we seem. Instead, He sees our intentions, desires, and faith—the reality of who we are inside.
This is life-changing for self-image. While people may misjudge or overlook us, God sees the real you. The good and the bad. He knows all of your struggles, your motivations, and your potential—and He loves you – the real you!
Adopted into God’s Family
John 1:12 says that by receiving Christ, we become children of God.
Romans 18:15 elaborates…
“For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, “Abba! Father!”
Adoption is a permanent status: fully accepted, fully loved, and fully secure. Our worth doesn’t depend on performance, appearance, or approval—it depends on our relationship with the Father, our Father.
When we embrace the truth that we are God’s children, it changes the way we see ourselves and others. We can stop striving for approval and start living from acceptance.
Practical Application
- Stop measuring by outward appearances: Identify areas where you compare yourself to others and consciously redirect your focus to God’s view.
- Affirm your identity: Remind yourself, “I am God’s child, fully accepted and loved, just as I am.”
- See others as God sees them: Practice looking past surface-level impressions and valuing the heart of those around you.
Closing Thought
True self-image is not shaped by human standards but by God’s. He sees you fully and loves you completely. When you embrace your identity as His child, you gain confidence that is not dependent on appearances, approval, or performance.
Starter Prayer
“Father, thank You for seeing my heart and not just my outward appearance or circumstances. Help me to rest in Your unconditional acceptance and love in Christ, and to see others as You see them. Teach me to live as Your child, fully secure in Your family.”
