You Are Created in God’s Image
Scripture:
“God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.” (Genesis 1:27, NASB95)
Introduction
How do you see yourself? Many people struggle with self-image—measuring themselves by appearance, performance, or approval from others. The scriptures provide truth essential to a healthy self-image. Before there was sin, before shame entered the world, God declared something foundational about every human being: we are created in His image. He also declared the creation of man and woman to be “very good”. These truths are part of the understanding God provides for us to learn how to think of ourselves properly, always in light of the Creator.
Created with Dignity
When God said, “Let Us make man in Our image” (Genesis 1:26), He set humanity apart from the rest of creation. Stars, oceans, and animals are amazing, but humanity alone bears God’s image. That means each person—young or old, weak or strong, famous or forgotten—has dignity and worth. Your value isn’t based on you and your various distinctives but rather on who made you.
Psalm 8 reflects on this truth:
“What is man that You take thought of him, and the son of man that You care for him? Yet You have made him a little lower than God, and You crown him with glory and majesty.” (Psalm 8:4–5)
God crowned humanity with glory and honor, not because of achievements but because of His design.
The Struggle with Self-Image
Of course, we know the beginning didn’t stay perfect. Sin entered the world and distorted everything, including us, and how we see ourselves and others. Instead of reflecting God’s image clearly, we sometimes live with broken self-perceptions—feeling not good enough, unworthy, or comparing ourselves endlessly to others. But the original truth still stands: you are made in God’s image. Sin damaged it, but it didn’t erase it.
James 3:9 reminds us that even fallen humans still bear this image: “With [our tongue] we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the likeness of God.”
Application
If your self-image has been shaped by criticism, failure, or comparison, go back to the beginning. God’s Word declares: You are created in His image. That’s your starting point—not what culture says, not what you feel in your lowest moments.
Take a moment today to affirm this truth:
“I am made in God’s image. My worth comes from Him, not from what I do or what others say.”
And understand this, God made you. On purpose.
Psalm 139:13-14
For You formed my [i]inward parts;
You wove me in my mother’s womb.
14 I will give thanks to You, for [j]I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
Wonderful are Your works,
And my soul knows it very well.
And let these amazing and powerful truths change how you view yourself, but how you view others, too. Every person you encounter bears the image of God—and worthy of dignity, kindness, and respect.
Closing Thought
Your self-image begins with God’s image. Before you did anything, before you proved anything, God already stamped His likeness on you. That’s where real confidence begins.
Starter Prayer
“Lord, thank You for creating me in Your image. Help me to see my worth through Your eyes and not through the world’s measures. Teach me to honor the dignity You’ve given me, and to treat others with the same respect and love.”
